What is myProjectJK?

Prior to owning a JK I had a Hummer H2 for about 5 years and it was that vehicle that introduced me to OHV recreation.  OHV recreation was not the main reason for purchasing that vehicle but I did plan on using it to visit some hard to reach fishing spots, hiking trails, scenery (a hobby of mine is photography) and ghost towns via some of Colorado’s many back roads.   In the pursuit of these goals I realized I actually enjoyed the off-roading just as much as the other goals.  Like most beginners in the sport I gradually progressed from the easy trails to some harder and more challenging terrain.  After a couple of years or so I realized I needed to modify my vehicle to make it stronger and better so I could take on some new challenges.   Frankly, the Hummer H2 is not the right platform for the type of modifications I wanted to (or could) take on myself, so I decided to look for something new.

One of the things playing on my mind was the size of any new vehicle because I like to carry a lot of gear/people (tools, camping equipment, photography equipment, dog, kid, wife, coolers, recovery equipment, etc.).   Obviously the H2 had a fairly unlimited gear carrying capacity and Jeeps had always seemed too small to me.  I briefly looked at upgrading my H2 to an H1 but discounted that due to cost.

I liked the Wrangler Unlimited’s when I first saw the JK commercials in 2006 but it wasn’t until I saw Phil Day’s in action during a Hummer X Club event in Moab (summer 2007) that I seriously considered a JK as a replacement for the H2 .

Bottom line, the introduction of the unlimited 4-door JK, the increased gear/people capacity, the great platform to build from and the amazing amount of aftermarket support for the Jeep brand won me over (to the dark side as some of my Hummer  friends would say ;)).

And so began myProjectJK!
