Scott, Brian, Kathy and I had a great day running the Twin Cone trail. The weather was perfect (mid 70s), the sun was shining and it was nice to get out of the Denver heat.
The Twin Cone trail starts at the summit of Kenosha Pass about 4 miles from the town of Grant, Colorado.
A great place to meet and stock up on snacks and gas is the Conoco in the town of Bailey about 13 miles from the trailhead. |

After a mile or so on a public county road the trail starts to wind through Aspen and Pine forest and there are some some nice photo opportunities if you take the time to stop.

Once you get past the switchbacks in the forest Twin Cone offers a couple of fun rock gardens leading to a steep and rocky hill climb.

After you climb the steep hill and reach tree line there are some great mountain views and a couple of places for some good group shots.

Climbing up the last few hills brings you to the summit at 12,300 feet and this is the end of the trail. The views from the top are why Twin Cone is one of my favorite trails.

We chilled at the summit for an hour or so eating lunch and chatting then we made our way back down towards the trailhead. This was uneventful until Brian’s Jeep decided to break a front UJ for no apparent reason on one of the last switchbacks.
Luckily Scott had a spare axel shaft and between us we had enough tools to swap it out.
